It was the summer of 1995, Rick was playing high school baseball and working a part-time job at Safeway, a local grocery chain, as a courtesy clerk, aka grocery bagger. Rick was headed into his senior year of high school, and wanted to devote as much of his time to his sports as he could. He was feeling overwhelmed by the 20 hours that he had to put in at Safeway to keep his active status. He had been discussing with his buddy, Sean Anderson, who also worked at Safeway, about quitting his job.
It was then, June of 1995, when Chandra became employed by Safeway as a courtesy clerk. Rick and Chandra were introduced when the experience courtesy clerk, Rick, had to show Chandra the duties of this job. The thoughts went through Rick's head, "How can I quit this job now?"
You would never think that two people, who clean public bathroom together, swept isles of grocery floors, and pushed buggies would fall in love with each other.
As Chandra did not have a car, and would work the mid-night shifts with Rick, he would offer to take Chandra home. It was some time in July when Chandra wrote in the dust of Rick's car her telephone number.
August 23rd was the first date, as it took Rick that long to get the nerve to call Chandra. The two of them had dinner together at Chili's and then proceeded to the movie theater, however not previously knowing what was playing, they decided to see "Dangerous Minds" not a very good first date movie.
It was August 27th in which the love was found.
Chandra was working the mid-night shift on August 27th, Rick worked the ten o'clock shift. Rick knew that Chandra had buggy duty between 10pm and 11pm. Rick secretly went to the flower department and bought a rose. He then placed a buggy next to his car without Chandra noticing. He waited for Chandra to come in with her load of buggies, and asked her to come to his car. He told Chandra that there was a buggy next to his car. When the both of them got close to Rick's car, Rick placed Chandra's hand into his and asked her to close her eyes. He guided her to his car. Rick began to say how much he enjoyed her company; while at the same time reaching into his car to get the rose. He began to stroke the rose down her nose, and across her forehead. "Will you be my girlfriend?" he asked. Of course that melted Chandra's heart, and she couldn't resist this question; she said yes.
